Notice what gives you energy.
Think about the parts of your work you most enjoy. Is it solving a difficult problem, organizing a process, leading a team, or working closely with customers? Your next role should make room for the work you find meaningful.
Write down what matters.
Consider the responsibilities, working environment, schedule, development opportunities, and compensation that would support your next step. Decide which are essential and where you can be flexible.
Take stock of what you bring.
Update your résumé with recent responsibilities and specific examples of your contributions. Include the skills you have developed and the work you would like to do more of. You do not need every answer before starting a conversation.
Start with a conversation.
Talking through your goals with a recruiting partner can help you organize your thinking. Share your experience, ask questions, and be clear about your timing. Exploring possibilities does not have to mean making an immediate move.
